STORAGE
The Fire District protects numerous warehouse/manufacturing occupancies. One of the most significant challenges within these occupancies involves storage practices for high piled storage both on floor and within racking systems. The following resources are intended to provide guidance on proper storage methods within these occupancies:
Fire District Ordinance Amendment Section 315:
SECTION 315 General Storage. Amend by adding the following new section:
315.8 ADDITIONAL STORAGE REQUIREMENTS. The requirements of 2021 NFPA 1 Chapter 33 Outside Storage of Tires and Chapter 34 General Storage shall be applicable for all occupancies regulated by the 2021 International Fire Code.
Pallet Storage: (Click here for a resource on Pallet Storage)
General Commodity Storage: (Click here for a resource on General Commodity Storage)
Hazardous Materials Storage: In addition to the 2021 IFC code requirements (For specific information, check out our: Business Fire Inspection Guide and our Common Occupancy Approval Guide),the Fire District requires annual submission of a Hazardous Materials Inventory list, availability of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), a safety plan, proper signage/markings on interior and exterior (i.e. NFPA 704 Diamond), proper storage cabinets, propane cages, and spill control. The Fire District utilizes a 3rd Party Hazardous Materials consultant to assist with inspections of occupancies that store, use, manufacture, and handle hazardous materials.
