| At approximately 10:01 a.m., units from the West Chicago Fire Protection District responded to an Alert 3 on Runway 33 at DuPage Airport.
A single-engine aircraft was preparing to depart but could not achieve the necessary speed for takeoff. The attempt was aborted, and the pilot tried to bring the aircraft to a stop. The aircraft overran the end of Runway 33 and continued into a grassy area. While in the grass, the aircraft struck a sign, which resulted in damage to its left wing and body. The aircraft came to a stop shortly after the collision.
The impact caused a fuel leak in the left wing. Personnel from the DuPage Airport Authority, assisted by West Chicago Fire Protection District crews, responded quickly to stop the leak and contain the spilled fuel.
Three people were on board the aircraft at the time of the incident. All three exited the aircraft safely without any injuries.
Once the fuel leak is contained, the DuPage Airport Authority will coordinate the removal and transport of the aircraft to a designated hangar. |
