West Chicago Fire District personnel responded to a reported structure fire at 200 block of West Pomeroy at approximately 2:15 p.m. Upon arrival, crews encountered a fire in a basement wall of a single-family residence that was extending to other void spaces. The fire was quickly extinguished and all occupants had safely evacuated without injury. Due to the damage and the need to disconnect electricity, the City of West Chicago Building Department deemed the home uninhabitable. The cause of the fire was accidental and caused by the use of a portable torch for home repair. The West Chicago Fire District was assisted by several neighboring communities and the City of West Chicago Police Department.
